Destin, Florida - Conference USA concluded its annual Spring Meetings today as C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky and staff hosted Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Faculty Athletics Representatives and head coaches for football, men's and women's basketball from all 12 member institutions. Conference television partners, bowl representatives and other guests also participated in the event.
The meetings launched on Monday with a presentation to the joint group of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletics representatives of the long-term strategic, branding and public relations plans. All were recommended for adoption and will be presented to the Board of Directors during their meetings next month.
Additionally, the conference made decisions on a number of topics to recommend, including approval of conference championship dates and sites for the 2006-07 athletic season.
It was announced that Tulsa will be recommended to host Conference USA Championships in the sports of Men's Soccer (Nov. 1) at the Donna J. Hardesty Complex Soccer and Track Stadium, Women's Basketball (March 1-4) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center and Women's Tennis (April 19-22) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
These facilities are used to holding big events. The 2004 NCAA Division Men's Tennis Championships called the Case Tennis Center its home, while the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships were held at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The 2005 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships wer run at the Soccer & Track Stadium.
In just its second year as a league member Tulsa will have hosted five major conference championships. This past season, Tulsa hosted conference championships in Men's Tennis and Softball, in which both titles were won by Tulsa.
Others topics at the C-USA meetings to recommend included: · The recommendation to return to the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. for the 2007 C-USA Men's Basketball Championship.
· The recommendation to move from a 14-game to a 16-game conference format for men's basketball, with round-robin play and five mirror games. Those game match-ups will be considered by the men's basketball task force chaired by East Carolina Athletics Director Terry Holland.
"As the week comes to a close, I'm very pleased with how productive and enjoyable these meetings were," Banowsky said. "It was great to see so many coaches and administrators working together. It was an excellent week in Destin."
The dates and sites for 17 of the 19 Conference USA 2006-07 Championships are listed as follows. At least nine different schools will host a championship next season, with Houston, Rice and Tulsa slated to host multiple championships. The Football Championship will again be held at the home site of the East or West Division champion with the best overall record.
