Greenville, N.C. - The University of Tulsa softball team dropped its third series finale of the season in a 3-2 loss at East Carolina on Sunday morning. The two teams pushed up the game an hour in hopes of avoiding impending rain in the area. Tulsa falls to 18-20 on the year, 4-7 in Conference USA play. ECU now sits at 28-12 overall and 6-3 in C-USA games.
The Golden Hurricane scored first with a run in the top of the first. Junior Sara Dyer posted a single to right field for the Hurricane's first hit, coming with two-down. Freshman Lauren Lindsay followed with a double to left field, scoring Dyer for a 1-0 TU lead.
ECU, however, did not waste anytime by scoring two runs in the bottom of the opening stanza. After a leadoff single, the Pirates hit a two-run homer to right field for a 2-1 advantage. TU was able to tie the contest in the top of the third inning.
Freshman Vanessa Vice hit a two-out double to center field, then scored the tying run on Dyer's second single of the contest. The RBI was Dyer's 36th of the season, just seven shy of the single season school record. Her 96 career RBI are also the second most in school history.
Freshman Jackie Lawrence took over in the circle for the Hurricane and shut down the Pirate bats, allowing only two baserunners over the next four innings. During that stretch she struck out three batters and only allowed one runner to get to second base.
The seventh inning was not the same however for the Hurricane. After senior Angela Osbon was stranded following a two-out single, the Pirates took advantage of lost focus. A leadoff single to rightfield gave ECU its third runner during Lawrence's time in the circle. A walk, followed by a pair of wild pitches allowed the winning run to come home.
Tulsa returns to the friendly confines of the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex for a non-conference doubleheader with Central Arkansas. The Golden Hurricane and Bears will open play at 3 p.m.
