El Paso, Texas - The University of Tulsa softball team finished the regular season with a 4-0 victory over UTEP at Helen of Troy Field on Sunday. The win was TU's 10th in 11 all-time meetings with the Miners. It also assured the Golden Hurricane of a winning record for the sixth consecutive season.
The Golden Hurricane scored all four runs in the third inning. Junior Sara Dyer recorded her 25th double of the season to open the frame. Following a ground out that got Dyer out at third, senior Angela Osbon was safe at first. A single by freshman Vanessa Vice gave TU a pair of baserunners. Sophomore Brooke Smart doubled to left centerfield, allowing to Osbon to score. With the ball getting away from the left fielder, Vice was also able to score on the play. After a line out, senior Lindsay Galloway posted her first home run of the year, with a shot to left center to put TU up 4-0.
Sophomore Katie Lee pitched a perfect three innings to start the season, including four strikeouts. In the fourth, she hit the first batter, and then gave up her first hit of the contest to the next batter. Both runners were eventually tagged out on their way to third base, ending the threat. The Miners posted a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, however the runner would not advance past first.
Lee struck out six in her 13th complete-game of the season, improving to 12-9 overall. She also win seven of her eight decisions in Conference USA play. Not giving up a walk marked the seventh time this season Lee pitched a complete game without allowing a base on balls.
Tulsa closes the regular season with a 30-26 record, 13-10 in C-USA play. It is also the sixth consecutive season Tulsa has won at least 30 games. UTEP concludes its campaign with a 28-23 mark, 7-16 in C-USA games.
The Golden Hurricane will face Memphis, winner of its final six C-USA games to qualify for the league's tournament, in the first round of the Conference USA Championship presented by Coca-Cola on Thursday in Orlando, Fla.
