Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team got a near record performance from freshman Jordan Kinard, sparking a 3-0 victory over UCA at the Holiday Inn Select-Tulsa Festival. In the Golden Hurricane's second game, TU shutout Eastern Illinois, 8-0 in five innings.
Earlier in the day, Missouri State shut out North Dakota State, 4-0 and run-ruled UCA, 13-3. Valparaiso also defeated EIU, 6-1 for the first Crusaders victory of the season.
The Golden Hurricane bats started on fire against the Bears, posting six doubles in the first two innings to go along with three runs. Junior Stephanie Chomicki, senior Sara Dyer and junior Kailey Yarmer hit back-to-back-to-back doubles in the first inning, to give TU an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play. TU continued the double theme in the second inning with junior Brooke Tower leading off with a twin bagger. After a fielder's choice by sophomore Christian Timmons, senior Lindsay Tower recorded TU's fifth double of the game, to score Timmons. Sophomore Lauren Lindsay doubled home Tower with two outs, to give TU a 3-0 lead.
Freshman hurler Jordan Kinard did her part in the circle to keep the TU lead. The Sand Springs, Okla., native struck out 15 UCA batters to pick up her first collegiate win.
In the night cap, the Hurricane made sure the bats were still warm. TU pounded out 11 hits for the second consecutive contest, including five for extra bases. Lindsay led off the TU first inning with a single, followed by a single from Chomicki and doubles by Dyer and Yarmer. A ground out by Vice and an RBI single from Timmons gave TU an early 4-0 lead.
The Hurricane tacked on two more runs in the second inning after freshman Kelly Chapman led off the stanza with a double to left field. Lindsay hit a two-run home run to center field to make the TU lead 6-0. A leadoff single by Smart in the third inning, followed by a bunt single from Timmons helped set up TU's final two runs of the day. Lindsay doubled home a pair of runs with a two-double twin bagger to centerfield as well.
Sophomore Jackie Lawrence took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth, when EIU's Robyn Mackie lined a two-strike pitch to right field. The hit bounced right in front of a hustling Lauren Menke and rolled to the wall, allowing Mackie to advance to third on the triple. However, on the very next batter, a deep foul ball down the rightfield line was caught by Menke, who throw a cannon shot to home plate to catch Mackie in a rundown for the double play and preserve the shutout. Lawrence struck out five in the complete-game performance to even her record at 3-3.
