Tulsa, Okla.- - The No. 9 ranked Houston Cougars certainly flexed some of their muscle Sunday afternoon while winning the rubber match of a three-game series with The University of Tulsa, 11-1. UH hit four home runs, including two in the decisive sixth inning where it scored six runs to break open a 1-1 game.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth on a solo home run, TU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Stephanie Chomicki singled to left centerfield with one out, as TU had at lease one hit in every inning except the seventh. She would advance to third on sophomore Christian Timmons' ninth double of the season, to give TU a pair of runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk to senior Sara Dyer, junior Kailey Yarmer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Chomicki.
Much like it did in Saturday's first game, Houston quickly regained the momentum. After a pair of infield singles, a fielding error by TU loaded the bases for Houston. A force out at home recorded the inning's first out, however the bases were still loaded. A double to centerfield plated two runs, while a throwing error on the next batter scored another run for the Cougars. UH then hit back-to-back home runs for an 8-1 lead before Tulsa could get out of the inning. All told, Houston sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on five hits and two Tulsa errors.
The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, on a solo homerun to start the stanza and a two-run double after another throwing error and infield single.
Tulsa (24-20, 9-9 C-USA) will have a busy week on the road now, traveling to Central Arkansas on Tuesday and Missouri State on Wednesday before starting a three game series at Marshall on Saturday. Houston became Conference USA's first 40-game winner, improving to 40-7 on the year and 15-2 in league action.
