Birmingham, Ala.- - The University of Tulsa softball split a pair of games for the seventh time this season. TU defeated UAB at George Ward Park, 2-1, in the first game of a three game series with the Blazers. However, UAB used a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to take Saturday's nightcap, 6-5.
In the first game, the Blazers took an early 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded wild pitch. However, TU quickly took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Vanessa Vice led off the inning with a walk, followed by a grounder by junior Brooke Smart. A single from freshman Kelly Chapman gave TU a pair of baserunners. Junior Kailey Yarmer took a 2-2 pitch to right centerfield for a triple that allowed Smart and Chapman to score. The 2-1 lead was all freshman Jordan Kinard would need, as she picked up her seventh win of the season. She struck out 12 Blazers in the complete game effort.
UAB scored first in the second game, with a solo home run by senior Holly Krzan to lead off the first inning. Again TU came back with four runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Lauren Lindsay hit her 18th double of the season with a one-out shot down the leftfield line. Fellow sophomore Christian Timmons followed with a single up the middle to give TU runners at the corners. An UAB fielding error on a fly ball from senior Sara Dyer allowed Lindsay to score, tying the game. A walk by Vice loaded the bases for TU, setting up a sacrifice fly from Smarth that allowed Timmons to score. Chapman's two-out single scored Dyer and Vice for a 4-1 TU lead.
Tulsa added to its lead with a run in the fifth inning also. Dyer posted a leadoff double in TU half of the stanza, she would advance to third on an illegal pitch. A wild pitch would allow her give TU a 5-3 lead. Junior Katie Lee relieved starter Jackie Lawrence in the in the fourth, sitting down the Blazers in order in the fourth and fifth. A pair of walks however set up Leigh Walker's two-out three-run home run to centerfield, giving UAB a 6-5 win.
The win improved UAB's season record to 19-25, while TU now stands at 21-17 on the year. Tulsa has won eight of its 14 conference games, with UAB winning six of its 14 league contests. The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
