Tulsa, Oklahoma -
The Tulsa women's soccer team dominated Southern Miss, 4-0, on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane moved to 7-8-2 on the season and 4-5 in Conference USA, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-11 overall and 0-9 in the league.
Hannah Taylor put TU on the board quickly as she headed in a corner kick taken by Jennifer Kacergis at the 2:16 mark to take an early lead. Kacergis scored her own goal off a pass from Melissa Hailey eight minutes later for the two-goal cushion.
Both teams sat scoreless for the next 71 minutes that ticked off the clock, but Kayla Chambers went one-on-one with USM keeper Holly Cox and netted a goal in the 83rd minute. Rachel Garcia tallied the Hurricane's final goal two minutes later on a put-back from Shannon Locke's attempt.
"It was a big game for us tonight, not just because of senior night, but because of the conference implications," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "Our number one goal is to make the conference tournament. Our destiny is in our hands and tonight was a big step to making our goal."
Kacergis led the TU attack with seven shots, including three on goal, and one goal and an assist for three points. Chambers, Locke, Chadney and Stephanie Aitken all had two shots, while Hailey picked up two assists in the contest. Katie Bykowski logged all 90 minutes in goal and earned seven saves.
TU out-shot USM, 19-14, including an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal, and had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
TU honored all 11 seniors tonight, including Mackenzie Ayer, Courtney Chadney, Chambers, Rebecca Cowles, Sarah Greene, Hailey, Kacergis, Locke, Emily McElrath, Allie Rapp (sat out this season due to a career-ending injury) and Taylor after the game.
"It says a lot about our program that we could start all 10 seniors and not miss a beat," Cussen said. "It was a very good crowd and for everyone to stick around after the game to honor our seniors, it was a perfect evening. We played well and we honored our seniors with the win."
Tulsa will conclude its home schedule on Sunday, taking on 11th-ranked UCF beginning at 12 noon at the Hurricane Stadium.
