NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Tulsa men's and women's cross country teams each had stellar performances in the 55th running of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon on the nine-hole golf course on the campus of The University of Notre Dame.
Both fields were littered with teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Division I National Polls, and the Golden Hurricane took down most of them to prove they, too, are one of the best in the country. The TU men placed fourth out of 21 teams, and the women's side finished in eighth out of 24 teams.
MEN
The only three teams who were able to defeat Tulsa in the 8K race were No. 3-ranked Oregon (first with 69 points), No. 16 New Mexico (second with 78) and No. 21 Florida State (third with 99). The Golden Hurricane captured fourth place with a score of 196.
TU defeated No. 5 Alabama (8th place), No. 14 Villanova (13th), No. 18 Arizona State (11th), No. 27 Butler (12th), and No. 30 UCLA (6th). Washington, who is receiving votes in the polls, finished in 19th.
Headlining the men's side was sophomore Chris O'Hare. He paced the Golden Hurricane with a 21st-place finish in a time of 24:19. Junior Justin Duncan ran a time of 24:35 and finished in 34th, and fellow junior Carl Stones finished four seconds behind his teammate and landed in 37th. Sophomore Geraint Davies (49th) and junior Paulo Pinheiro (57th) rounded out the scoring for TU.
Juniors Daniel LePage (73rd) and Tom Marshall (93rd), sophomore Sam Masters (119th) and senior Mark Davidson (151st) also ran for Tulsa but did not factor into the team score.
WOMEN
All but one team that defeated Tulsa is currently ranked in the top 12 in the nation. The Golden Hurricane blew past No. 19 UTEP (19th place), No. 23 SMU (23rd), No. 24 Iowa (13th) and No. 30 Notre Dame (18th). Arkansas (9th) and Penn State (10th) are receiving votes and were also knocked off by TU, which took eighth with a score of 232.
Villanova showed why it is the No. 1-ranked team in the land as the Wildcats won going away. Their score of 64 was nearly half as much as second-place and No. 5-ranked Oregon. No. 2-ranked Florida State placed third, and No. 12 New Mexico finished in fourth.
Junior Paula Whiting paced Tulsa with a 12th-place finish in a time of 16:48. Crossing the line next for the Golden Hurricane was junior Jacqueline Fairchild, who finished 26th with a time of 17:13. Senior Katie Wright finished 32nd with a time of 17:21, and sophomore Jaclyn Rollins came in 59th with a time of 17:38. Sophomore Ashley Scott rounded out the scoring for TU, as she finished in 105th with a time of 18:10.
