Dallas, Texas - The University of Tulsa women's soccer team battled SMU to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the final game of the season on Thursday night at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. TU concluded the year with an 8-9-2 overall record and a 3-6-2 mark in Conference USA, while the Mustangs went to 11-6-3 on the season and 6-4-1 in the league.

"I thought we played really well tonight," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "It shows a lot of character to go out there and continue to battle knowing the season was over after tonight's game. We had some great opportunities to score a second goal, but just couldn't find the back of the net."

The Golden Hurricane ended the season the same way it began, with just one loss in six games.

"I think this team has a lot to build on," Cussen said. "We started the season and ended the season strong. The middle of our season cost us a chance to play in the Conference USA tournament, but I am extremely proud of this team."

Stephanie Aitken put Tulsa on the board quickly as she drilled in a goal from 18 yards out at the 3:57 mark, giving the Golden Hurricane the early advantage.

Both teams would battle until the 90th minute and just when TU looked as if it was going to earn the win, Kenzie Scovill forced the game into overtime as she headed in a cross from Shelby Hartweck with just eight seconds remaining in the contest.

The two teams fought for the 20 extra minutes, but the game remained tied.

Claire Nicholson led the Hurricane attack with eight shots, while Aitken added four attempts and Jordan O'Brien had two shots. Chelsea Smith logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up eight saves.

"Chelsea has stepped up after losing Katie to injury the last two games," Cussen said. "It says a lot about her abilities and that we have depth in that position."

SMU outshot Tulsa, 24-19, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal, and the Mustangs had a 10-6 lead in corner kicks.
