Softball Splits Doubleheader with Memphis Saturday

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team split its doubleheader with Conference USA foe Memphis, winning game one, 7-5, and falling in game two, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
The series rubber match will be played Sunday at noon. Live stats and live video will be available at www.TulsaHurricane.com. The game will be broadcast in the Tulsa area on 88.7 FM HD3 Hurricane Spirit Radio, and can be heard online as well.
The Golden Hurricane (17-13, 3-2 C-USA) overcame five errors in the first game with seven runs on seven hits, including three runs in the fourth and seventh innings to earn the victory. Memphis is now 15-11 overall and 4-3 in C-USA this season.
Kalynn Schrock (7-3), who relieved Jackie Lawrence to begin the sixth inning, earned the win for Tulsa. Lawrence pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs, three earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Schrock threw 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit, with three walks and five strikeouts. Memphis starter Carly Hummel (8-5) absorbed the loss.
Right Fielder Lauren Lindsay led TU with two hits and two RBI, while designated player Lauren Menke hit a three-run home run. Catcher Christian Timmons went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Memphis put two runs on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run by third baseman Maddie McKinley. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the second on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Left fielder Lelani Bernardino grounded to second, where the second baseman chose to throw home, but Alyssa Palmieri scored safely.
Tulsa responded with a run in the bottom of the second when third baseman Cassidy Bowen hit the first pitch over the left field fence, making the score 3-1, Memphis.
The Golden Hurricane took the lead in the fourth on a three-run home run by Menke. First baseman Vanessa Vice led off with a walk and Timmons followed with a single. With one out, Menke rocketed the 0-1 offering into the hedges just beyond the center field fence.
Memphis scored two more runs in the fifth inning. With two outs and a runner on second, pinch-hitter Kailey Kassner singled to center field to score the base runner, and first baseman Jessica Phillips reached on an error by the second baseman to score Kassner for the 5-4 lead.
Tulsa took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with three runs on a pair of doubles. Timmons led off with a walk, and with two outs, second baseman Skylar Swanson walked to put runners on first and second. The two runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, and center fielder Caitlin Everett singled to left center, scoring Timmons. Lindsay then doubled to left field to plate Swanson and Everett, giving TU the 7-5 lead.
Game 2: Memphis 6, Tulsa 1
Memphis scored six runs on eight hits and committed no errors, and Tulsa scored one run on six hits with two errors as the Tigers defeated the Hurricane in game two. It was the first time in 14 regular season games that Memphis has beaten Tulsa.
Shortstop Samantha Cobb hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead TU. Vice picked up a pair of hits as well.
Jordan Kinard (5-5) started and absorbed the loss for TU, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing six hits, five runs, four earned runs, three walks and eight strikeouts. Kalynn Schrock relieved Kinard in the sixth, allowed one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Memphis starter Vanessa Walle (6-4) went the distance, scattering six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Memphis led off the game with a home run, and picked up two more runs in the second with a two-run home run.
Tulsa got its first hit in the third inning, a single up the middle by designated player Kelly Chapman and Everett walked, but TU could not get anything going, despite having two base runners with one out.
The Tigers scored two more runs in the fourth on another two-run home run by Walle, and scored its final run in the sixth when Maddie McKinley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, sending the runner home from third.
Tulsa picked up five hits over the next three innings, including two hits in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but could not push any runs across the plate. The Hurricane had the bases loaded in the sixth with two out when Skylar Swanson hit a long fly ball that was caught at the fence in right center.
Cobb gave TU its only run of the game with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
