TULSA, Okla. - Senior Jackie Lawrence overcame a leadoff home run to strikeout five batters and allow just three more hits in The University of Tulsa softball team's 4-1 defeat of Nebraska Saturday evening in the Tulsa Embassy Suites Festival at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
The Golden Hurricane (9-9) scored three runs in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and added one more in the fifth. Lawrence earned the win for TU, and improved her record to 3-4 on the season. Nebraska fell to 10-9 overall, and starter Ashley Hagemann (3-5) picked up the loss.
Tulsa fell, 2-1, to North Dakota Saturday afternoon in eight innings in the first game of the day.
"The first game didn't feel like we were as determined and focused," Tulsa head coach John Bargfeldt said. "You just didn't see that intensity of focus. That was really disappointing from the standpoint that that you just came off a big win the night before, and you have a chance to keep the momentum going, and we didn't do it. I told the team the only way to wipe the taste out of your mouth is to do what they did in that second game. They know that it's very disappointing to play the way that we did, especially when we waste a good pitching performance from Kalynn Schrock.
"It was good to see them bounce back and have a determined effort in the second game. The thing I'm happiest about is Jackie. That's what Jackie did for us consistently last year. It's taken her a while to get that feeling back. I'm going to be anxious to see, where she goes from here with it. She threw a great ballgame. She didn't let that (home run) get her down and went ahead and shut them out the rest of the way."
Tulsa closes the Embassy Suites Festival Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. with a game against North Dakota. TU and Nebraska meet again at 1 p.m. Full tournament schedule and live stats and video can be found at http://www.tulsahurricane.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/10-tulsa-embassy-suites-festival.html.
The Golden Hurricane scored four runs on four hits against Nebraska, while the Cornhuskers scored one run on four hits. Right fielder Lauren Lindsay homered in each game, giving her eight for the season, and extending her career total to 40. She went 3-for-5 and scored three total runs in the two games.
After going down in order in each of the first three innings, Tulsa broke through with three runs in the fourth. Center fielder Caitlin Everett led off with a single to right field, and after Lindsay drew a walk, shortstop Samantha Cobb drove home Everett with a single through the left side.
First baseman Vanessa Vice singled into right center to score Lindsay, and second baseman Skylar Swanson walked to load the bases. With one out, catcher Christian Timmons hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Cobb from third.
Lindsay's solo homer in the fifth provided an insurance run for the Hurricane.
The runs TU scored in the fourth proved to be all Lawrence needed, as she fought back after giving up the leadoff home run to allow just three more hits and a pair of walks. She struck out five and left a runner on third at the end of an inning twice, including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning. After hitting a batter and walking another with two out, she struck out the eight-hole hitter to end the threat.
North Dakota 2, Tulsa 1
North Dakota beat Tulsa, 2-1, in eight innings Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Sioux homered in the top of the fifth inning, and Lauren Lindsay knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot of her own.
Under international tie breaker rules, North Dakota's leadoff hitter reached on an error, and the placed runner scored from second on the play. The Hurricane did not score in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman Kalynn Schrock (4-3) recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts, and took the loss after pitching the entire game and allowing one earned run on just two hits and four walks. Lindsay was 2-for-3 in the game, and Jessica Stoelke and Kelly Chapman each picked up one hit in the game.
