Austin, Texas - The Tulsa men's golf team sits in 10th place after the first two rounds at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. The Hurricane finished the first 18 holes in a 13th place tie on a sunny, 80-degree day Monday afternoon. Tulsa carded an opening round 21-over par 305 at the par-71 University of Texas Golf Club course.
The Hurricane improved by 11 strokes in second round play with a 10-over par score of 294 and has a 36-hole total of 599.
Host Texas leads the tournament after two rounds with a 579 score, followed by second-place New Mexico with a score of 580. The nation's No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys sits in 11th place, one stroke behind the Hurricane with a 600 score.
Tulsa senior Rob Laird turned in the best first round performance for the Hurricane with an even-par 71 to tie for seventh-place, and scored a second round 78 for a 149 two round total and is in 29th place. Freshman Stephen Carney and sophomore Andre Tourinho are tied for 32nd place with a total score of 150. Tourinho carded an opening round 76 and had a 74 for the second 18 holes of the day. Carney opened with an 80, but shot 10 strokes better in the second round with a score of 70.
Tulsa sophomore Arie Fauzi carded an opening round 78 and had a second round score of 73 to finish the first 36 holes with a 151 total and is in 45th place. Hurricane freshman Chris Worrell carded rounds of 80-76 for a 156 total and 64th place.
New Mexico's John Catlin and SMU's Ben Tewes share the individual lead with an even-par score of 142.
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
