TU XC Heads To Mizzou

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Joplin, Mo., Sept. 18 for the 22nd annual Missouri Southern Stampede. The women's 5K will begin at 9 a.m., and the men will follow with an 8K that begins at 9:45 a.m.

Sophomore Mitch Johnson paced Tulsa in last year's event in Joplin. He finished third overall with a time of 25:41. Junior Bill Martin clocked in 11 seconds behind his teammate, but he came in fourth overall.

Senior Brett Koehn placed fifth overall and third on the team with a time of 25:55. Junior Brad Harris placed 21st overall, as he finished a minute behind Koehn.

The TU men took second out of six teams, losing only to Kansas State.

The women's side also finished second to K-State, and they were paced by senior Melanie Cleland. Cleland ran a 17:25 and took second place overall. Sophomore Jaclyn Rollins came in seventh, and sophomore Erin Huddleston (video interview) finished 14th. Sophomore Ashley Scott (16th), senior Laura Englehutt (20th), sophomore Zoraya Hightower (46th) and sophomore Tricity Andrew (58th) also competed.

Both teams are coming off strong showings at the season-opening Hurricane Festival Sept. 4. The women won the event, with three members of the Golden Hurricane finishing in the top four. Junior Paula Whiting took home individual honors, senior Katie Wright finished in second and Cleland came in fourth. Rollins (7th) and Scott (8th) also finished in the top 10.

The men had four runners finish 4th through 7th, and they took second overall in the duel competitions. Sophomore Chris O'Hare (4th), junior Daniel LePage (5th), freshman Sam Masters (6th), junior Carl Stones (7th) and Martin (9th) paced Tulsa.
