Tulsa, Oklahoma -
The Tulsa women's soccer team topped Missouri State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 5-1 on the year, giving the Golden Hurricane the best start through six games in school history. MSU fell to 3-1 overall.
"I am very proud of this team for posting the best start in school history," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "We talked early on in the preseason about the fact that you can't do the same thing each year and expect a different result. The team knew they would have to work harder than they had before to be successful and they've done just that. As we more forward in the season, hopefully we can keep our success going."
The first 45 minutes ticked off the clock and both teams headed to the lockerroom scoreless, but both TU and MSU came out in the second half looking to get on the board quickly.
Sophomore Rebecca Handley registered her second goal in as many games as she headed in a cross from Lexis Learmonth in the 49th minute. Claire Nicholson dribbled in a ball from the right side and picked up her sixth goal from 10 yards out at the 53:53 mark.
Tara Bailes pulled the Bears to within one less than a minute later as she headed in a cross from Nia Williams, but TU held on to the one-goal advantage for the remaining 35 minutes for the win.
The Tulsa attack was led by Brandi Neilson and Nicholson who attempted five shots apiece, while Handley and Rachel Garcia each had three shots. The Golden Hurricane out-shot Missouri State, 22-10, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Katie Bykowski logged all 90 minutes in goal and earned four saves for 20 on the season.
Tulsa will return to action against Arkansas State on Friday, Sept. 10th. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
