LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Tulsa softball team got a tag-team shutout, a record-setting strikeout performance and clutch hitting on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Kansas, 3-0 and 4-2, Wednesday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

The Golden Hurricane improved to 35-11 overall with a huge Conference USA home series looming this weekend against UAB.

Aimee Creger (17-2) earned the game-two win and set the school single season strikeout record by sitting down 12 Kansas batters. She now has 188 strikeouts this season.

Creger also had two hits and two RBI, while Samantha Cobb had two hits, scored twice, and drove in another run.

In game one, Lacey Middlebrooks and Jordan Kinard combined for a shutout and Kelly Chapman drove in two runs to lead Tulsa to a 3-0 win.

Middlebrooks (10-4) pitched four strong innings, striking out three batters and allowing three hits, but no runs, before giving way to Kinard. The senior hurler tossed the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters to pick up her second save of the season.

Tulsa got its first hit of the second game in the fourth inning when Samantha Cobb led off the frame with a single up the middle. After a groundout, Creger drilled a double to the wall in left field, scoring Cobb to give TU a 1-0 lead. Designated player Lacey Middlebrooks followed with a base hit up the middle that plated Creger and chased Jayhawk starter Alex Jones from the game, with the Hurricane leading, 2-0.

Jones (5-2) threw 3.1 innings, both runs allowed were earned, and she struck out two batters.

The Golden Hurricane tacked on another pair of runs in the fifth inning when Cobb laced a double into the left field corner, scoring Caitlin Everett from first base, and Creger ripped a single to right field, plating Cobb from third. Everett led off the inning with a single, and after doubling, Cobb took third base on a wild pitch.

Kansas got on the board for the first time in the doubleheader with a two-run, frozen-rope home run in the fifth inning by designated player Liz Kocon. The homer also scored Brittany Hile, who reached on a two-out single.

Creger retired the Jayhawks in order in the sixth and seventh innings to help seal the win for TU.

The Golden Hurricane, sitting at second place in Conference USA, returns home Friday and Saturday for a big C-USA showdown against first-place UAB. The teams play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 3 p.m., and a single game Saturday at noon.
