June 16, 2011
What a year for TU Athletics. The year began with a 4-0 women's soccer victory over Northwestern State and ended in the spring with all six spring sports competing in national championship events, as the men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA "Final 16" and the softball team was one win away from reaching the NCAA "Super" Regional. Tulsa added to its' already league-leading Conference USA Championships with six league titles and one shared Western Division Crown and now has won 34 C-USA Championships in six years as a league member.
The year included a 30-match winning streak for the women's volleyball team en route to a 31-3 overall record and 20-0 C-USA mark . . . one of the most prestigious football wins in school history with a 28-27 win at Notre Dame . . . then a 62-35 victory over Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl for a final Associated Press ranking of 24th nationally . . . the men's and women's cross country teams brought home league titles, while Chris O'Hare narrowly missed the school's first national individual crown in track with a second place performance in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Meet . . . Tulsa's men's soccer team made its' fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance after earning a school-best No. 2 national ranking early in the season . . . the men's basketball team claimed a prestigious road win over Memphis, while finishing second in the regular season Conference USA standings.
What a fall and winter it was for Golden Hurricane Athletics. But, it did not stop there, as Tulsa had one of its' best spring sports seasons ever in school history -- the women's tennis team started out the spring 5-2 and then went on a 21-match winning streak before losing in the NCAA regional finals for a final season record of 26-3 . . . for the men, the season would end up being Tulsa's first to the NCAA Final 16 after winning its fifth C-USA crown in six years . . . the golf teams made the NCAA Regionals . . . and, the softball team won 40+ games for the fourth time in school history, finishing with a 46-15 mark and only losing out to No. 9-ranked Oklahoma in the Regional semifinal.
Now, look at some of the individual highlights of the season - sophomore Tyler Henderson was named AVCA second-team All-American and the Conference USA Player of the Year, while fellow sophomore Jordan Clampitt was selected as the C-USA Setter of the Year . . . junior quarterback G.J. Kinne was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year in football, while second-team All-American Damaris Johnson led the nation for the second straight year in all-purpose yards, and became the NCAA's career record-holder for all-purpose and kickoff return yards . . . a pair of freshmen defenders, Shawn Jackson and Marco Nelson, earned Freshman All-America honors . . . sophomore Chris O'Hare ran the fastest indoor mile in the NCAA in 2011 . . . senior Justin Hurtt not only led the Tulsa basketball team in scoring with a 20.0 average, but also was the league's leading scorer . . . senior Alexandra Kichoutkin moved into second place on Tulsa's all-time wins list with 109 victories on the tennis court, while all six women's tennis players earned all-conference accolades . . . men's tennis athletes Marcelo Arvelo and Japie De Klerk earned C-USA Player and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively . . . with three no-hitters, freshman Aimee Creger was named third-team All-American in leading the Tulsa softball team . . . and, tracksters Paula Whiting and Chris O'Hare earned All-America mention by making the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
