LAFAYETTE, La. - The 24th-ranked Tulsa softball team closed out the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics with a 12-1 win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at Lamson Park.
Junior shortstop Samantha Cobb went 5-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Golden Hurricane (2-1). Sophomore third baseman Jill Barrett drove in five runs on a pair of extra base hits, combining with Cobb to drive home nine of the 12 TU runs.
Sophomore Kalynn Schrock (1-0) earned the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in 5.0 innings. Sophomore Aimee Creger tossed 2.0 shutout innings in relief. Rutgers starter Abbey Houston (1-1) allowed eight runs in 2.2 innings and took the loss for the Scarlet Knights (2-2).
Cobb finished the three-game weekend 10-for-12, and reached safely in her final 10 at-bats, going 9-for-9 with a walk in that stretch. She hit three homers, totaling seven RBI, six runs scored, a 1.583 slugging percentage and a .846 on-base percentage. Cobb, along with sophomore Shelby Blanton and junior Lacey Middlebrooks were selected to the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics All-Tournament Team. On Saturday, the Hurricane fell at No. 23 ULL, 19-4, before defeating Mississippi Valley State, 11-3.
"The biggest thing to take away from this weekend, is that we got better each game," Tulsa head coach John Bargfeldt said. "If you take away one inning (11-run sixth vs. ULL on Saturday) from the whole weekend, we still feel pretty good. It was good to see that we were able to put away one rotten inning, which we probably hadn't seen before, and still be able to get better as the weekend went on."
Tulsa stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the first three innings, scoring two runs in the top of the first, one in the second, and five runs on the third frame.
In the first inning, Barrett reached on an error and Cobb singled through the left side with one out. Barrett scored on a two-out fielder's choice by freshman first baseman Julie Kernen, and senior second baseman Skylar Swanson singled to right center, plating Cobb.
Speedy junior center fielder Caitlin Everett reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning, stole second base, moved to third on a single by Cobb and scored on a wild pitch.
The Golden Hurricane scored all five of its third-inning runs with two outs. Junior catcher Cassidy Bowen got things started with a single up the middle, the left fielder Blanton singled to second base, and Everett loaded the bases with an infield single to short. Barrett then followed with a triple to left center, and Cobb hit a two-run homer to right center.
Rutgers scored its only run in the fourth inning when third baseman Ashley Alden doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ashley Bragg.
After three scoreless frames, Tulsa tacked on four more runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Barrett and a two-run homer by Cobb. Barrett's double drove home freshman Amy Harrison, who pinch-hit for Blanton and reached on a fielder's choice, and Everett, who singled to center field.
The Golden Hurricane returns to the field next weekend when it travels to No. 17 Texas A&M for the Aggie Classic Feb. 17-19.
