ORLANDO, Fla. - The Tulsa softball team picked up a road split in its Conference USA opener, at UCF, falling, 4-0, in game one, and winning, 3-0, in game two Saturday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex.
Aimee Creger (7-2) pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters for the Golden Hurricane (15-5, 1-1 C-USA). She carried a no-hitter through 6.1 innings. UCF (16-8, 1-1 C-USA) starter Ali Schmidt (5-2) allowed three earned runs on eight hits in the loss.
"We kept our goal intact, of winning two out of three games," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "We had to have that second game. It was good to see our team bounce back after the loss. It was the first time we faced a good pitcher (Mackenzie Audas, in game one). With the wind blowing in, we couldn't depend on the home run. We talked about getting more balls squared up on the barrel. We'll see if we can do that tomorrow after seeing their pitcher for a full game."
Tulsa got its first run in the fifth inning when shortstop Samantha Cobb hit a single to center field to drive in left fielder Cierra Hughes, who reached on a bunt single.
Catcher Cassidy Bowen blasted a two-run home run in the sixth to push Tulsa's lead to 3-0. It was her first homer of the season. The dinger scored Jessica Stoelke, who led off the inning with a single down the right field line.
Creger was nearly perfect through five innings, allowing just two baserunners on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. She got out of trouble in the sixth after the Knights put runners on second and third following a walk, hit-by-pitch and an error.
In the seventh, UCF led off the inning with a walk, followed by a fly out and the first hit of the game - a flare to left field. The Knight threatened with the tying run on base after a hit-by-pitch, but Creger got a strikeout and ground out to second to end the game.
Creger only allowed four balls hit out of the infield - three fly outs and the lone base hit - in the game.
UCF 4, Tulsa 0
UCF defeated Tulsa behind a one-hit shutout from Mackenzie Audas to win game one, 4-0.
