FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 27-ranked University of Tulsa men's tennis team upset No. 18 Fresno State 4-3 Friday night at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane (9-7) took the doubles point and split the six singles matches to take down the Bulldogs (12-2) on enemy grounds, snapping FSU's 11-match win streak.
Tulsa has now won its last two matches that have come down to 4-3 decisions after the team started the year 0-5 in those close matches.
The newly-formed doubles team of junior Tristan Jackson and freshman Lucian Gheorghe kicked off competition with an 8-6 triumph over Jean-Charles Diame and Reid deLaubenfels at the third position.
Junior Grant Ive and freshman Alejandro Espejo clinched the opening point of the match with an 8-5 decision over David Ayoun and Zachary Leslie on the second court.
The fifth-ranked tandem of senior Ashley Watling and junior Clifford Marsland made it a clean sweep by toppling No. 65 Remi Boutillier and Francis Alcantara 8-6 at the top of the lineup.
Tulsa jumped on top 2-0 after Jackson started singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over deLaubenfels at the sixth position.
No. 58 Alcantara put Fresno State on the board after he defeated No. 75 Watling 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 from the second position, but the Golden Hurricane added another point following Ive's 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Ayoun on the fourth court.
Espejo secured the team victory by taking down Leslie 6-3, 7-5 at the fifth flight.
The final two matches went the way of the Bulldogs.
No. 22-ranked Boutillier defeated No. 68 De Klerk 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at the top of the lineup, while Diame defeated No. 97 Marsland 6-7 (11-13), 6-4, 3-0, retired on the third court.
Tulsa will remain in Fresno, Calif., to face Hawai'i (3-7) at noon March 25.
