Houston Takes Game Two over Tulsa, 5-2

TULSA, Okla. - Houston scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead and held on to win game two over Tulsa, 5-2, Saturday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Center fielder Caitlin Everett, third baseman Jill Barrett and first baseman Shelby Blanton led the Golden Hurricane (31-11, 13-4 C-USA) with two hits apiece.
TU starter Aimee Creger (14-5) struck out five and allowed five earned runs on seven hits to absorb the loss. Summer Groholski (6-4) struck out three and allowed one earned run on eight hits to earn the complete-game win for the Cougars (27-17, 12-5 C-USA).
Houston took the early lead once again on a solo home run, this time by first baseman Jaime Edwards, in the top of the second. The Hurricane rebounded to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with a walk and two straight singles. Lacey Middlebrooks led off with a walk, followed by a base hit by Jessica Stoelke that stopped on the foul line halfway to first base. First baseman Shelby Blanton then singled to shortstop, whose late throw got away from the first baseman, allowing Middlebrooks to score.
The Cougars got a one-out walk and a base hit, followed by a ground out and a two-run single from Melissa Gregson. Haley Outon then homered to right field to put UH ahead, 5-1.
Tulsa got a run back in the sixth, but it was too little, too late. The Hurricane loaded the bases with a walk by Middlebrooks, fielder's choice with a throwing error on a ground ball from Stoelke, and a single by Blanton. Following a fielder's choice by Bowen that got the runner at the plate, pinch hitter Julie Kernen grounded the third for a fielder's choice, allowing Stoelke to score.
Tickets to TU home softball games are $5.00 general admission and can be purchased at the gate. Youth softball girls are admitted FREE when wearing their team jersey/uniform.
