Barrett and Kernen Earn C-USA Academic Honors

TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa junior Jill Barrett and sophomore Julie Kernen were selected to the 2013 Conference USA Softball All-Academic Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Barrett has compiled a 3.61 GPA majoring in exercise and sports science, while also working on minors in deaf education and speech pathology. She was also a member of the 2012 Conference USA All-Academic Softball Team. Kernen has earned a 3.93 GPA in speech pathology.
Barrett, a third baseman from Greenwood, Ark., has been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll all three years, and serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at TU. She leads the Golden Hurricane with a .413 batting average and 78 hits, and has compiled 40 runs, 29 RBI, 11 doubles, a .497 slugging percentage and a .454 on-base percentage. She hit .463 with 20 runs, 13 RBI, .524 slugging and .522 OBP in conference play.
Kernen, a first baseman from St. Louis, Mo., is a two-time C-USA Academic Medalist, and a member of the Tulsa President's List and the Tulsa Dean's List. She has compiled 39 RBI, eight home runs, eight doubles, 30 runs scored, 25 walks, a .289 batting average, .512 slugging percentage, a .409 OBP and a .991 fielding percentage. In C-USA games, she hit .354 with five home runs, four doubles, 27 RBI and a .696 slugging percentage.
The Golden Hurricane opens the C-USA Championship at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against UCF at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
