MAUERMAN HONORED BY NATA AT NATIONAL CONVENTION

Tulsa, Oklahoma – Longtime University of Tulsa Team Physician Dr. George S. Mauerman, of the Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, will be awarded an honorary membership into the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) on June 25, 2015, at the NATA Convention in St. Louis, Missouri.
 
The honorary membership in NATA is awarded to individuals who have shown profound interest in and have made significant contributions to the profession of athletic training. These persons display a dedication to advancing, promoting and championing the efforts of the NATA and its members.
 
Criteria for the honorary membership includes that those individuals must be a non-athletic trainer and have at least 15 years involvement with athletic training and/or the association.
 
Since 1970, Mauerman has dedicated himself to the student-athletes of The University of Tulsa as team physician, using his role to bring exceptional medical and moral support to the program while setting a model standard for the practice of sports medicine.
 
Mauerman graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University in 1959, then completed his medical degree at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. When duty called, he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-67, stationed at March Air Base in California. He received the Surgeon General Award on discharge, then returned to New York to complete his internship and general surgery residency at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.
 
Mauerman completed an orthopedic residency at the prestigious Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. He arrived in Tulsa in 1970 after being hired by the founding members of the Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center.
 
During his career, Mauerman has amassed many professional distinctions and awards. He was a founding member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and has been inducted into the halls of fame of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers' Association (2000), Saint Francis Health Systems (2004) and Holland Hall High School (2007). He was awarded the Thomas Brady Award in 2000 by the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine. In 2004, he received the J. Paschal Twyman Service Award from The University of Tulsa and the Tulsa World J.V. Haney Service Award, and in 2012, he was honored with the Saint Francis Distinguished Physician Award.
 
He received the ultimate honor when the sports medicine facility at The University of Tulsa was named the George S. Mauerman Sports Medicine Center in April 2013.
