Tulsa men's soccer graduated senior Abé Matamoros was named as The American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award recipient, as announced today by the league office.

Matamoros earned two bachelor's degrees, one in finance and one in economics, in 2015.  He was a three-time selection to the CoSIDA All-District VII first team and was a Conference USA Academic Medal Winner as a freshman, sophomore and junior.  Matamoros received Tulsa's Warren Garrison Academic Excellence Award as a junior, and was a two-time selection to TU's Ultimate Team.

On the field, Matamoros was a four-year letterwinner, started in 60 of 78 career games, and had six goals and five assists for 17 career points.  As a senior, he was tabbed to The American all-conference second team, The American all-tournament team and was selected as the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of The American Tournament.  Matamoros was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week once, the 2011 C-USA All-Freshman team and was named TU's "Man of the Match" eight times during his career.

Matamoros is one of 22 student-athletes honored today by the conference.  The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which are voted on by the league's Academic Affairs Committee, are given to one student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades and performances, and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible.
