The Tulsa men's soccer team battled second-ranked Virginia to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Friday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. TU moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while UVA moved to 1-0-1 overall.
"I thought the guys connected really well, showed good patience in our possession and defended the counter-attack pretty well," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "Obviously they are a very good team and I am pleased with our overall performance, but I am disappointed with the result. We hit the cross bar three times tonight and were just a little unfortunate to not get another goal. We had a number of good individual performances and we had guys come in off the bench and impact the game. We just have to continue to get better. This was a good road test for us and we'll have to be locked in mentally again on Sunday as we play North Carolina."
The first half ticked off the clock scoreless, but the Cavaliers didn't waste much time in the second frame as Riggs Lennon punched in a free kick at the 48:21 mark to give UVA a 1-0 lead.
Kay Duit evened the score in the 68th minute as he headed in a goal off a cross from Miguel Velasquez. This was Duit's first goal of the season and second of his career.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the final 42:56 to end the contest in a tie. TU had three solid chances in the overtime periods, as Velasquez hit the crossbar and Cameron Drackett had an attempt saved in the first overtime, and Cole Poppen hit the crossbar in the second overtime. TU had a 6-4 lead in shots in the extra minutes.
Both teams had 18 shots on the night, while Virginia had an 8-6 lead in shots on goal and TU had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Velasquez had a team-best five shots, while Drackett came in off the bench and had three attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes between the posts and had seven saves.
Tulsa will return to action against fourth-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 6. Game time is set for 6:00 pm Central in Chapel Hill, N.C.
