Luke Traynor Named Midwest Region Athlete of the Year

TULSA, Okla. – University of Tulsa cross country senior Luke Traynor was named the Midwest Region Male Athlete of the Year, as announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Traynor claimed the individual title at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, running the 10K race in 30:18.5 and winning by three-tenths of a second. His top finish led the Golden Hurricane to a runner-up finish and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships this weekend. Traynor also won the American Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 29.
Traynor is Tulsa's fourth USTFCCCA Midwest Region Male Athlete of the Year in the last five years. He joins Chris O'Hare (2012 and 2013) and Marc Scott (2015) – also regional meet champions – as winner of the region's top individual award.
The Golden Hurricane, ranked 16th in the nation this week, will run at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The ranking is the highest of the season for the Hurricane.
Tulsa jumped nine spots in the national poll, from No. 23 last week, after its second-place finish at the Midwest Regional Championship. TU has been ranked in the national poll all season, but this is its first week in the top-20 this year.
