WICHITA, Kan. – The Tulsa softball team fell at Wichita State, 11-3, in nonconference action Wednesday evening at C. Howard Wilkins Stadium.

Freshman first baseman Tori Stafford hit her first career home run, a two-run shot in the second inning, to lead the Golden Hurricane (23-7). Senior catcher Catherine Horner went 3-for-3 at the plate, and senior center fielder Jodi Edmiston was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Shockers (18-12) scored six runs in the fifth inning to pull away from a 5-3 lead to end the game. WSU hit five home runs, including two each by designated player Macklin Hitz and right fielder Paige Luellen.

The Hurricane returns home this weekend to play host to East Carolina in its American Athletic Conference home-opening series. TU and ECU play at 5 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Tulsa scored two runs in the second inning on Stafford's homer, to tie the score, 2-2. TU then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman designated player Julia Hollingsworth, scoring freshman second baseman Morgan Neal, who led off the frame with a double.

The Shockers scored two runs in the second on a two-run homer by Hitz, and retook the lead, 4-3, in the third on a two-run home run by third baseman Mackenzie Wright. A solo homer in the fourth by Luellen made the score 5-3, and then six straight WSU batters scored to begin the fifth inning, capped by a three-run homer by Hitz and a solo homer by Luellen.

TU sophomore Emily Watson (7-6) pitched four complete innings, and took the loss in the circle for the Hurricane, while WSU reliever Kaitlyn Malone (7-5) pitched the final three innings, and picked up the win.
