Tulsa Softball Storms Past East Carolina, 8-0, Saturday Afternoon

TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore pitcher Emily Watson recorded nine strike outs and allowed just one hit to lead The University of Tulsa softball team to a win over American Athletic Conference opponent East Carolina, 8-0, Saturday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
 
The Golden Hurricane improves to 25-7 overall, while the Pirates fall to 18-20 overall.
 
Watson picked up two strike outs in the top of the first inning, before sophomore short stop Shelby Estocado ran down a foul fly ball to record the third out. The Hurricane allowed zero runs on zero hits and zero errors.
 
Tulsa was able to find offensive rhythm in the bottom of the first inning picking up one run on one hit and zero errors. With the bases loaded, junior Maddie Withee recorded the game's first RBI on a fielder's choice  to give the Hurricane a 1-0 lead. Freshman Julia Hollingsworth grounded out to the third baseman to end the inning.
 
In the top of the second inning, Watson gave up her only hit of the game. The Hurricane defense allowed zero runs on one hit and zero errors. Watson picked up two more strike outs in the inning.
 
Tulsa went three up and three down in the bottom of the second inning recording zero runs on zero hits and zero errors.
 
Watson and the Tulsa defense continued the defensive production in the top of the third inning allowing zero runs on zero hits and zero errors.
 
Estocado hit a double through the short stop, which allowed freshman Morgan Neal to score from second base giving the Hurricane a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Maddie Withee grounded out to the third baseman to end the inning.
 
Watson continued her impressive pitching performance in the top of the fourth inning retiring the first three batters.
 
The Hurricane picked up two runs on three hits and zero errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Tori Stafford picked up two RBI's with a huge single up the middle to give the Hurricane a 4-0 going into the fifth inning.
 
The Hurricane concluded it's impressive defensive performance in the top of the fifth inning by not allowing any runs, hits or errors. Watson registered her ninth and final strike out of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
 
The Hurricane exploded offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning picking up four runs on five hits and zero errors. Maddie Withee crushed a single to right field, which allowed Catherine Horner to score giving TU a 5-0 lead. Hollingsworth picked up two RBI's when she singled to the second baseman giving the Hurricane a 7-0 lead. Senior Kaitlin Allen doubled to left field, which allowed senior Jodi Edmiston to score from second base to clinch the 8-0 Tulsa victory.
 
The Hurricane will take on American Athletic Conference foe East Carolina on Sunday, April 3, at 12:00 noon for the third game of a three game series at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
