Softball Falls in Game 2 at UCF, 4-1

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Tulsa softball team dropped Game 2 of its American Athletic Conference series at UCF, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex.

Similar to Friday's series opener, the Golden Hurricane (27-9, 5-3 American) and Knights (26-14, 3-0 American) played scoreless ball for the first few innings, until UCF scored a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Hurricane tied it, 1-1, with an RBI single by shortstop Shelby Estocado in the top of the sixth, but UCF scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to win, 4-1.

Senior Caitlin Sill (15-2) took just her second loss of the season after allowing four unearned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. TU totaled four hits – one each by Estocado, Maggie Withee, Catherine Horner and Julia Hollingsworth – and two errors in the ballgame. UCF reliever Shelby Turnier (13-12) pitched the final two innings in relief of starter Jamie Ujvari, and earned the win.

The series finale is at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.

"With the walks and the freebie errors, we're just playing under pressure every inning. We have to start making them earn what they get," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "We need the experience of some of these games. There have been a lot of games this year where we haven't been in that situation. The defense is kind of tightening up instead of thinking about making plays. Maybe the experience will be good for us in the long run. That's the way we have to look at it. We have to learn how to play in close games, because we're going to have them."

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth, third baseman Maggie Withee singled to left field for Tulsa's first hit of the game. TU hit four consecutive singles before an out was recorded, chasing Ujvari from the game. The catcher Horner singled through the right side, and the designated player Hollingsworth bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Estocado then bounced a single over third base to plate Withee and tie the score, 1-1.

UCF first baseman Kalyn Cenal reached on an error in the fourth inning, and scored on a base hit by left fielder Linnea Goodman to make the score 1-0. Designated player Jessica Ujvari hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to put UCF ahead, 2-1, and second baseman Cassady Brewer hit a two-run single to make it 4-1.

TU had baserunners on third base in the second and third innings and a runner on second in the fifth before breaking through with a run in the top of the sixth. The Hurricane, however, was unable to reach base again after Estocado's RBI single.
