STILLWATER, Okla. – The Tulsa cross country teams competed at the Cowboy Duels Thursday morning, signaling the start of the 2016 cross country season for the region's collegiate programs.

The Golden Hurricane competed against Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Oral Roberts and Wichita State in the opening meet, consisting of a 5K run for the men's teams and a 3K run for the women's teams. The TU men's squad went 3-2 in the team duels matchups, while the women's team went 2-3 in the duels.

"Today was a big plus," Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "Our younger kids got to spike up and get a race in, and I think we were just trying to get a lot of nerves settled. It's where we go from here after this meet and see where we progress. I think, overall, it was a plus."

The Tulsa men, led by sophomores Isaac Dobos, Jay Ort and redshirt freshman Stuart McNutt placing from 8-10 in the 5K run, defeated Arkansas, 23-34, Oral Roberts 15-50, and Wichita State, 15-50. TU fell to Oklahoma, 21-36, and Oklahoma State, 20-35.

The TU women were led by freshman Adrena Mazzei and redshirt freshman Avery Culpepper's top-20 finishes in 3K run, claiming two duels wins. The Golden Hurricane topped Oral Roberts, 15-48, and Wichita State, 15-50, and fell to Oklahoma State, 18-37, Oklahoma, 15-43, and Arkansas, 15-48.

Dobos and McNutt placed eighth and ninth with identical times (16:07.0), and Ort followed in 10th just one-tenth of a second behind at 16:07.1. Junior Kirk Smith placed 18th in 16:25.0, junior Dallas Elmore finished 19th in 16:31.9, freshman Adam Beaux placed 22nd in 16:43.4, and junior Steven Salvano ended 23rd with a time of 16:52.1.

Mazzei and Culpepper paced the women's squad just one-tenth of a second apart – 11:02.5 and 11:02.6 – at 16th and 17th place, respectively. Freshman Ashley Barnes finished 19th with a time of 11:06.1, freshman Reagan Hausmann finished 23rd with a time of 11:12.2, sophomore Alyssa Bolliger placed 26th with a time of 11:16.5, redshirt freshman Amanda Heard ended 27th with a time of 11:17.6, and redshirt freshman Sabrina Monsees finished with a time of 11:49.2 to place 39th.
