After Tulsa went three-and-out to start the game, the Green Wave quarterback Jonathan Banks took Tulane's first play 50 yards to the Tulsa 1-yard line, and two plays later scored for an early 7-0 lead. From that point, Tulane went ahead 21-0 at the 7:45 mark of the first period.
Red-shirt freshman quarterback Luke Skipper entered the game for Tulsa's fourth possession and completed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hobbs, capping a 2-play, 60-yard drive, to make the score 21-7.
Tulane finished out the first half with four second-quarter touchdowns to take a 48-7 halftime lead. The Green Wave held a 435 to 128-yard advantage in total offense and scored on each of its seven first-half possessions.
Tulsa opened the second half stopping the Green Wave on its first possession, and then the offense responding with a 4-yard, 89-play drive as Skipper scored from one-yard out, making the score 48-14.
From that point, the two teams exchanged scores. Freshman Shamari Brooks scored Tulsa's two final touchdowns, running 13 yards at the 3:21 mark of the third quarter and 12 yards with 8:41 left in the game.
Tulsa ended the game with 412 total yards, including a season-high 273 yards, while Tulane had 653 yards. For the third straight week, the possession time against another option team was controlled by that team, as the Green Wave held a 43:38 to 16:22 edge.
A CLOSER LOOK AT TODAY'S GAME
THE SKIPPER COMES IN … Luke Skipper made his second game appearance this season and his first since the season opener when he was inserted into the lineup in the 1st quarter with Tulsa trailing 21-0 … Skipper completed a 1-yard pass on his first play and on his second play threw 59 yards to Justin Hobbs for a touchdown … Skipper came into the game having completed 2-of-3 passes for just 10 yards.
LONG PASSES … Tulsa came into the game with just 2 passes for more than 40 yards on the season, but in today's game the Hurricane had 3 passes for 50+ yards … the first covered 59 yards from Luke Skipper to Justin Hobbs for a touchdown … the second was a 74-yard Skipper pass to Keenen Johnson … Skipper then connected with Keylon Stokes in the third quarter on a 52-yard reception to the Tulsa 13-yard line … the 74-yard pass was completion was the longest play from scrimmage for the Hurricane this season, surpassing a 71-yard Chad President run.
POSSESSION TIME DISADVANTAGE AGAIN … In the previous two games, Tulsa's offense only had possession of the ball for a total of only 37:41 minutes … including the 8:58 and 9:51 in the first half against New Mexico and Navy, respectively … today in the first half, Tulsa had the ball for only 6:51 compared to 23:09 for Tulane.
BANGED UP DEFENSE … A defensive unit that was down 4 starters last week from the opening day lineup due to injuries – DE Jesse Brubaker, DT Kolton Shindelar, CB Kerwin Thomas and SAF Jordan Mitchell – suffered another injury to a starter on the first series as SAF Manny Bunch left the game and did not return to the lineup … Brubaker and Thomas returned to the playing field today.
FRESHMAN DRIVE … On Tulsa's third scoring drive, true freshman Shamari Brooks had a 19-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage, and also had a 4-yard run … before red-shirt freshman QB Luke Skipper threw 52 yards to true freshman Keylon Stokes to the Tulane 13-yard line … Brooks ran the final 13 yards for Tulsa's touchdown to make the score 55-21.
