BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Tulsa Softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Cardinal Classic, falling to Northern Illinois 2-0 before responding with 2-1 win over Kansas as junior pitcher Emily Watson moved into ninth all-time on Tulsa's all-time career strikeout list with 305.
Watson had a second-straight quality start against Kansas (9-5 overall) as the junior pitcher kept her opponent without a hit through at least the first three innings for the second time in as many days. Watson struck out seven through the first three innings before giving up the first Kansas hit after her eighth strikeout in the fourth inning.
Rylie Spell picked up a RBI single with two outs to score Maddie Withee from second base for the first score of the evening. Tulsa extended their lead to 2-0 in their final at-bat with a key run as the Hurricane (7-7 overall) loaded the bases after a Maggie Withee single and Neal walk led to Hollingsworth crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Kansas put their lone run of the evening on the board by way of a Harly Ridling solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh before two Watson strikeouts ended the game and gave her a season-high 15.
Haley Meinen and the Tulsa defense worked around runners in scoring position early in the first game of the day against the Huskies (6-2 overall), stranding two runners on base in the first before working out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the second inning to keep NIU off the scoreboard.
The Huskies would eventually break through with a two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the third inning to go ahead of Tulsa 2-0 after Lexi Blevins replaced Meinen in the circle before the inning.
Tulsa looked to put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth after three straight singles from Morgan Neal, Hughes, and Meinen to load the bases before a groundout left three stranded. Hughes had a career-high three base hits in the game with a perfect showing at the plate while Neal's two hits on the day gave her hits in eight of the last nine games.
Tulsa wraps up weekend play at the Cardinal Classic with a matchup against host Lamar tomorrow afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
