Two Golden Hurricane Hall of Fame Legends Pass Away

TULSA, Okla. –– Late last week two former University of Tulsa student-athletes passed away –– football quarterback Jerry Keeling (1957-60) and basketball center Greg Stewart (1980-82).  Keeling was a 1989 inductee into the Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame, while Stewart was a member of the 1980-81 Golden Hurricane basketball team that was recognized in 1998 as the TU Hall of Fame Honor Team .
 
Keeling was a two-time first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference selection as Tulsa's quarterback in 1959 and 1960. He threw for 2,468 yards and 21 touchdowns in his career, while rushing for another 942 yards.
 
Keeling grew up in Enid, Okla., and was an all-state high school quarterback. Following his collegiate career, Keeling had a long career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders. He first played defensive back, earning CFL honors in 1964, 1965 and 1967, then he moved to quarterback,
 
In his first three years under center, the Stampeders reached the West Division final in 1969, the Grey Cup final in 1970 and won the 1971 Grey Cup over the Toronto Argonauts. He played one more season with Calgary before moving on to the Ottawa Rough Riders and Hamilton Tigercats. He retired as a CFL player in 1975.
 
During his 15 seasons in the CFL, including seven in which quarterback was his primary position, Keeling completed 1,302 passes for 18,239 yards and 119 touchdowns. Keeling was inducted into the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame in 1989.
 
Stewart came to Tulsa with head coach Nolan Richardson in 1980 after helping Richardson's Western Texas Junior College team to an undefeated record and the NJCAA national championship. In that first season at Tulsa, Stewart helped lead the Hurricane to the 1981 NIT national title, while being named the MVP of the championship.
 
In the NIT title game against Syracuse, Stewart led Tulsa in both scoring (23) and rebounding (11), and scored the game-winning basket. In two years with Tulsa, he averaged 13.9 points and 6.6 rebounds on teams that posted a two-year mark of 50-13.
 
Stewart, from the Bronx, NY, was a fourth-round draft choice of the Boston Celtics in 1982, and played nearly 10 years professionally in Spain. He played 219 games in the Endesa League and averaged 17.3 points and 8.2 rebounds during his career.
