COLLEGE STATION, Texas â Iowa scored five runs in the third and then put the game away with five more over the final two innings to defeat Tulsa, 11-3, on Sunday, the final day of the Texas A&M Invitational.
Â
Shelby Estocado went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Sarah Briers also drove in a run for the Golden Hurricane (3-6). The Hawkeyes (4-5) were led by Sarah Kurtz, who went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Â
TU used an Iowa miscue in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Julia Hollingsworth reached on an error and quickly stole second. She would touch home two batters later when Estocado picked up an infield hit for the 1-0 cushion.
Â
However, Iowa took control with its five-run third inning and added another in the fourth for a 6-1 advantage.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Tulsa started a comeback with two runs to trim the deficit to 6-3.
Â
Estocado and Haley Meinen pulled off a double-steal as Estocado swiped home while Meinen took second. Briers then plated Meinen with a grounder to again cut into the deficit.
Â
But that would prove to be all for the Hurricane offense and the Hawkeyes scored three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take the 11-3 final.
Â
TU will be back in action next weekend when it will travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament, Feb. 23-25.
