TULSA, Okla. – Rylie Spell hit her first homer of the spring and Emily Watson struck out 12 as The University of Tulsa softball team defeated Illinois State, 6-1, on Wednesday night at the Collins Family Softball Complex.

Watson recorded her fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season and improved to 8-4 on the season with the victory as the Golden Hurricane (15-10) picked up its first home victory. The senior yielded just four hits in seven innings and closed the game by striking out the final three Illinois State batters.

Julia Hollingsworth went 2-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to 16 games, while Tori Stafford went 2-for-3 with her fifth double of the season and an RBI.

Tulsa got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first against the Redbirds (9-18) when Stafford singled to left field. Spell then led-off the second with her booming homer to center field and Estocado drove in another with a sacrifice fly and a 3-0 cushion.

In the third, Stafford started the frame with a double down the left field line and she would touch home on Shannon Hughes' deep fly ball to center that extended the advantage to 4-0.

That was plenty for Watson, who kept Illinois State off the board until a solo homer by Riley Strandgard in the sixth. Tulsa responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame as Morgan Neal drove home a run and another scored on a Redbirds error.

With a 6-1 lead, Watson made quick work of Illinois State in the seventh with three strikeouts to end the contest.

Tulsa will be back in action for four games over the weekend at the Wooo Pig Classic in Fayetteville, Ark. TU will start with a matchup against Omaha (12-14) at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16.
