HOUSTON – Shannon Hughes and Haley Meinen each homered, but for the second time in as many days it was a Sarah Queen homer that lifted Houston to a win over visiting Tulsa, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Julia Hollingsworth also doubled for the Golden Hurricane (26-20, 6-8) as three of the squad's five hits went for extra-bases. Samantha Pochop took the loss with three runs on seven hits and four walks with six strikeouts in five innings.

Queen's homer was her eighth of the campaign to lead the Cougars (29-16, 8-6), while Presley Bell pitched three shutout innings in relief to earn the win and improve to 4-3.

Houston got on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out run following Aspen Howie's single to right field. Tulsa tied the score in the top of the fourth when Meinen launched her homer to left-center field.

The Cougars regained a 2-1 advantage when Kaylin Crumpton drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame. But once again, the Hurricane used the long-ball knot the score when Hughes opened the top of the fifth with her second homer of the spring.

Queen broke the 2-2 tie on the second pitch of the bottom of the inning for what would prove to be the winning run.

In the top of the seventh, TU put the tying run on base as Sarah Briers worked a one-out walk, but Bell got two grounders to end the game.

The teams will close the series at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 22 in a contest that will be televised on ESPNU.
