TULSA, Okla. — In his first collegiate race, redshirt freshman Isaac Akers led the University of Tulsa men's cross country team to a first-place finish with a winning four-mile time of 20:12 at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday morning at Mohawk Sports Complex. Meanwhile, Reagan Hausmann paced the TU women's squad with a fourth-place finish in the two-mile race.

"I was happy because we ran a lot of kids that didn't have experience and that's probably the biggest thing that we looked at going into this meet," head coach Steve Gulley said. "We needed some experience and depth is a huge deal. You have to start getting some kids with experience for the big picture. I was happy with the effort, considering how hot it was, and I was more than pleased and happy to walk out of here with no injuries."

Akers crossed the finish line two seconds ahead of Arkansas' Matt Young, a native of Jenks, and the Hurricane had four runners in the top 10 to take the team title by a point over the No. 15 Razorbacks. Austin Del Rosso (20:23) finished fourth, while Cameron Field (20:33) finished sixth and Adam Breaux (20:38) crossed the line in eighth place.

Reed Sahadevan (21:08) finished 17th to round out the scoring for TU. Braydon Rennie (21:33/19th) and Bryan Corbaz (21:42/21st) also made their season debut at the meet.

Following TU (36) and Arkansas (37) in the team standings was Oklahoma (55) and Oklahoma State (98).

In the women's two-mile run, Hausmann crossed the line with a time of 11:25 to finish fourth. She was followed by Alyssa Solberg (11:29/6th) and Alice Newcombe (11:33/8th), who each had top-10 finishes in their collegiate debut. Allison Bailey (12:17/19th) and Avery Culpepper (12:33/22nd) rounded out the scoring, while Katie Andrews finished 24th with a time of 12:41.

"We needed some experience and I was really proud because we had three or four girls who worked together and that was probably the second thing I was looking at today," Gulley said. "Due to the heat we probably couldn't look at the times as much as just working together and getting something out of the meet. They showed they can work as a team."

In the tight team standings, Oklahoma (48) claimed the top spot followed by Oklahoma State (50), Arkansas (55) and Tulsa (59).

The teams will be back in action at the Missouri Southern Stampede, Sept. 15, in Joplin, Mo.
