Tulsa 28th-ranked men's cross country team earned a third-place finish, while the women's team placed 18th overall on Friday afternoon at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis.

The Golden Hurricane men trailed the nation's top-ranked Northern Arizona team, as well as No. 5 Stanford, but topped No. 6 Iowa State, No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 Portland, No. 11 Purdue, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 15 Indiana, No. 16 Virginia, No. 18 Michigan, No. 19 Wisconsin, No. 20 UCLA, No. 22 Utah State, No. 23 Princeton and No. 25 Eastern Kentucky.

"I think the boys ran a great race," Head Coach Steve Gulley said.  "They got themselves in a great position and executed the race plan as well as they could have.  Assistant Coach Taylor Gulley did a great job of setting up a game plan of staying in the pack to stay away from the wind until there was 2,000 meters remaining, and then go after it.  Even we were shocked at how tight of a finish our top five were within each other."

Peter Lynch led TU with a 14th-place mark in a time of 23:56.1, followed by four Hurricane runners that finished within nine seconds of each other, including Patrick Dever (35 – 24:06.8), Cameron Field (39 – 24:09.8), Isaac Akers (41 – 24:12.1) and Scott Beattie (46 – 24:15.5).  Reed Sahadevan (187 – 25:18.7) and Adam Breaux (218 – 26:05.6) round out Tulsa's 'A' race competitors, while Tyler McGinnis, Jerik Embleton and Greg Fehribach all ran in the 'B' event.

"Peter has worked hard and today was his day," Gulley said.  "If you lined our guys up, any one of the top five can get it done anytime we need it.  It has helped that we've been here the last few years and they knew what to expect at the start of the race."

55883On the women's side, Tulsa finished in the middle of the pack with an 18th place finish among 36 teams.  Top-ranked Arkansas claimed the top spot, while No. 4 Stanford, No. 9 North Carolina State, No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 10 Michigan State rounded out the top five teams.

"The girls had a great race," Gulley said.  "We've been here enough and with the leadership of our older girls, we took a step in the right direction today."

Caitlin Klopfer led the Golden Hurricane with a 36th-place mark in a time of 20:36.8, followed by Ashley Barnes in 95th place (21:16.0).  Caroline Miller (101 – 21:17.6), Reagan Hausmann (123 – 21:27.5), Jenny O'Bryan (151 – 21:40.0), Adrena Mazzei (167 – 21:48.8) and Katharina Pesendorfer were TU's remaining runners in the 'A' field, while Alice Newcombe captured a 34th-place time of 21:59.8 in the 'B' race.

Tulsa's men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Friday, November 1 in the American Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Memphis at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tenn.
