Celebrating 150 Years of College Football
In honor of College Football celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019, TulsaHurricane.com will recognize some of the most memorable moments and exciting plays in the history of The University of Tulsa football each week throughout the season.
Tulsa is in its 120th season of fielding a football team. The Tulsa gridiron tradition started as Henry Kendall College in 1895 with the first team posting a 1-0-0 record lead by coach Norman Leard. There were a few seasons in the early years that Kendall College did not field a team, but later becoming The University of Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane football teams have amassed 600+ wins in school history.
This 150th College Football Anniversary moment we take a HISTORICAL LOOK this week at the first pair of teammates in NCAA history to rush for over 200 yards in the same game.
Brown and Gage Surpass 200 Rushing Yards at Wichita State
In 1985, Tulsa running back Gordon Brown and quarterback Steve Gage became the first pair of players in NCAA history from the same team to each gain 200 yards in the same game. Brown rushed for 214 yards on 23 carries and Gage gained for 206 rushing yards on 26 carries in a 42-26 road win over Wichita State, Nov. 2, 1985.
Neither of the two led Tulsa in rushing touchdowns that day, however, as Bobby Booker had 3 rushing TDs and 89 total yards on the ground. As a team, Tulsa rushed for 554 yards on 68 carries for an 8.1 average per rush and set a school record with 28 rushing first downs. Tulsa's 637 total offensive yards was the most for a Hurricane team since 1967.
Since that day, only 5 additional pairs of backs have reached 200 yards rushing in the same game in NCAA FBS history.
