BATON ROUGE, La. — The University of Tulsa softball team got on the board first, but No. 11 LSU responded with a 12-run inning on its way to a 19-1 victory in the season-opener for both squads on Thursday night at Tiger Park.
Morgan Neal and Haley Meinen each had hits for the Golden Hurricane (0-1), while newcomer Alexis Perry drove in Tulsa's only run of the night.
Meanwhile, Michaela Schlattman went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to pace the Tigers (1-0). Maribeth Gorsuch tossed all five innings and recorded one strikeout to pick up the win in the circle.
Following a one-hour weather delay, the Hurricane opened the 2019 season with a run in the top of the first. Julia Hollingsworth, who earlier in the day was recognized as one of the top 100 players in the nation via Softball America, worked an eight-pitch walk to start the night before Neal's single to left moved the senior to third.
Hollingsworth would score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Perry for the early 1-0 lead.
However, the Tigers responded with a dozen runs in the bottom of the frame. LSU put up six more in the second and a run in the third for the 19-1 run-rule win.
The Hurricane will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 8, when it will take on Bucknell at 1 p.m. before another matchup with LSU at 6 p.m.
