TULSA, Okla. – Rylie Spell went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a season-high four RBIs as Tulsa swept its three-game American Athletic Conference series against visiting Memphis with a 12-5 win on Sunday at Collins Family Softball Complex.
Spell and Tori Stafford helped power the offense for the Golden Hurricane (24-10, 5-1) with home runs, their second and third round-trippers of the season, respectively. Chenise Delce picked up the win in the circle to improve to 10-3 on the season, while she also drove in a pair of runs.
Tulsa again showed its patience at the plate, drawing seven walks against the Memphis pitching staff in the contest and 21 free passes for the series.
Meanwhile, Ryleigh Aungst hit a two-run homer for the Tigers (18-17, 2-4) and Karli Perque took the loss in the circle after she allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks in 3.2 innings.
For the second game in a row, Memphis jumped out to lead with three runs in the first and another in the second.
Trailing 4-0, Tulsa got one run back in the third after a pair of walks and an error in the outfield before the home squad took the lead for good with a seven-run fourth inning.
All seven runs for the Hurricane came with two outs and the scoring started when Spell singled up the middle and another Memphis error brought home runs to make it 4-3. Stafford then launched a two-run homer over the wall in left for a 5-4 advantage.
A bases-loaded walk to Delce extended the cushion to 6-4 and Mikayla Whitten's two-run single made it 8-4.
The Tigers got one run back in the fifth, but TU put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the sixth.
Haley Meinen started the fifth with a walk and she was able to trot home on Spell's homer to center field. Five batters later, Delce ripped a single up the middle to bring home Josiey Muffley to make it 11-5.
Spell's day was not done, as she capped the day with an RBI single to center in the sixth to provide the final run of the game.
Samantha Pochop entered the game to start the fifth inning and she gave up just one run on three hits with two strikeouts to earn her third save of the spring.
The sophomore put an exclamation point on the series sweep with a strikeout to end the contest in the top of the seventh.
Tulsa will continue its homestand with a 5 p.m. matchup with Kansas (12-21) on Wednesday, April 3 at Collins Family Softball Complex.
