TULSA, Okla. – Wichita State scored all four of its runs over the final three innings and rode a one-hitter from Erin McDonald to defeat No. 25 Tulsa, 4-0, on Friday night to open a three-game American Athletic Conference series at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Mikayla Whitten had the only hit of the night for the Golden Hurricane (31-16, 12-4), with a two-out single in the fifth inning. Kassidy Scott did not allow a hit until the fourth but fell to 8-5 on the season after she allowed four runs on six hits through 5.2 frames.
Meanwhile, McDonald improved to 12-10 as she went the distance and tallied five strikeouts against one hit and two walks. Neleigh Herring hit a two-run homer for her fifth blast of the season to help pace the offense for the Shockers (29-21, 10-6).
Both pitchers came out on fire to start, matching each other zero for zero. Scott retired the first 10 batters that she faced before Ryleigh Buck's one-out single in the fourth. The junior got the next two hitters out to avoid any damage, but Wichita State broke through with two runs an inning later.
Bailee Nickerson started the inning with a double and it looked as though Scott might escape the jam, but Herring took the first pitch of her at-bat over the wall for a two-out, two-run homer. The Shockers doubled the advantage to 4-0 with two more runs in the sixth.
Tulsa's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth, when it loaded the bases with two outs. Alexis Perry was hit by a pitch before Whitten's single put the tying run on base. The Shockers pitched around Julia Hollingsworth to load the bases, but McDonald got out of the jam with a flyout.
The WSU hurler retired the final seven batters that she faced to close out the 4-0 victory, handing the Golden Hurricane its first league loss at home this spring.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.
