TULSA, Okla. – No. 25 Tulsa rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back and defeat Wichita State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Collins Family Softball Complex to even the three-game American Athletic Conference series at one game apiece.
Haley Meinen and Alexis Perry each homered for the Golden Hurricane (32-16, 13-4), while Julia Hollingsworth provided the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth. The offense was enough to back Chenise Delce, who improved to 13-5 after she allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Laurie Derrico hit a two-run homer for the Shockers (29-22, 10-7) as part of a three-run rally that gave the visitors a late advantage. Caitlin Bingham took the loss and fell to 13-9 after she yielded four runs on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts.
Like Friday night's series opener, both pitchers came out hot and the teams were hitless through three innings. Wichita State got its first hit with a leadoff single in the fourth. Tulsa's first knock also came to start the fourth inning and it was Meinen's solo homer to right-center that gave the home squad its first lead of the series.
The Shockers could not capitalize on leadoff hits in the fourth and fifth, but broke through with a three-run top of the sixth inning that included Derrico's two-run shot for a 3-1 lead.
However, the Hurricane rallied with three runs of its own in the bottom of the panel to take a slim 4-3 cushion.
After a flyout to start the frame, Meinen got the rally started with a double to right-center field. Perry then followed with her game-tying two-run homer to left field, which was her third round-tripper of the campaign.
Sarah Briers then dropped down a perfect bunt and beat the throw to first for an infield single. The sophomore then stole second and raced home on Hollingsworth's two-out hit to left field.
WSU put the tying run on base after a leadoff walk, but TU closed it out with great plays in the field by Delce, Tori Stafford and Perry to secure the win.
Game three of the series will start at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. TU will honor its senior class of Tori Stafford, Haley Meinen, Morgan Neal, Rylie Spell and Julia Hollingsworth following the contest.
