STILLWATER, Okla. — Freshman pitcher Chenise Delce recorded nine strikeouts and Tulsa scored five runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Arkansas, 5-0, on Thursday evening in the opening game of the NCAA Stillwater Regional.

With the victory, the Golden Hurricane (36-18) advance to the winner's bracket to face either No. 13 overall seed Oklahoma State (39-14) or BYU (29-24) at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 17.

Rylie Spell led the TU offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Julia Hollingsworth also collected a pair of hits and drove in a run. It was plenty for Delce, who improved to 15-5 after she scattered five hits to go along with her nine strikeouts.

The win marks the third straight NCAA Regional-opening win for the Hurricane over a Southeastern Conference school.

"I told [the team] after the game that I thought they put together a complete game in terms of playing good defense, and the pitching was outstanding," head coach John Bargfeldt said. "We had some outstanding defensive plays. We made the outstanding plays and we made all the routine plays that we needed to make. I felt like their swings were aggressive. I felt like at times this season that we took some defensive swings early in the count, and I challenged them this week to have a plan and to put some aggressive swings on the ball. Some of them led to hits and some of them led to tough plays on their part, so I commend them for that."

Meanwhile, Autumn Storms had six strikeouts and all five runs she yielded were unearned in falling to 20-8 on the season for the Razorbacks (38-19). Ashley Diaz and Danielle Gibson collected two hits apiece for Arkansas, who will face either Oklahoma State or BYU at 2:30 p.m. on Friday in an elimination game.

Haley Meinen got the five-run seventh started with an infield single before moving to scoring position on one of three Arkansas errors in the inning. The senior moved to third on a close play following a grounder and she raced home for the first run of the game after a grounder off the bat of Sarah Briers.

An error on the play allowed a second run to score and the advantage grew to 3-0 on Hollingsworth's single to left. After hits by Morgan Neal and Alexis Perry, Spell drove home two more with her single for a 5-0 lead.

Delce retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning with the help of her ninth strikeout and a diving catch by Mikayla Whitten in left-center field to end the game.

The freshman hurler came out on fire with five strikeouts through two innings, including three strikeouts looking. She struck out the side in the second and retired the final seven batters that she faced en route to the win.
