STORRS, Conn. – Haley Meinen went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, but Tulsa fell to UConn, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in the American Athletic Conference series opener.
Chenise Delce had two hits in as many at-bats and Julia Hollingsworth finished with a double and RBI for the Golden Hurricane (33-17, 14-5). Kassidy Scott took the loss in the circle, falling to 8-6 after she gave up three earned runs off six hits in six innings of work.
Meanwhile, Kiwi McDaniel drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies (21-27, 8-11). Jill Stockley improved to 3-8 with three runs allowed off seven hits with six strikeouts.
UConn got on the board first in the bottom of the first, picking up an unearned run on two hits and an error for the early cushion. The Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 with another run in the fourth before the Hurricane got a run back in the fifth.
Mikayla Whitten singled and stole second before coming around to score on Hollingsworth's double.
However, the Huskies came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to 4-1.
In the sixth, the Hurricane inched closer on Meinen's two-run homer to left. The blast, which was her team-leading fourth of the campaign, came after a single by Delce.
But that would be as close as TU would get. Stockley retired the next three batters that she faced before Marybeth Olson pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.
The teams will conclude the regular-season with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 4.
