DALLAS, Texas –– The University of Tulsa senior defensive standout Cooper Edmiston was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy preseason watch list, as announced today by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Edmiston was one of 92 defensive standouts from 65 FBS schools named to the watch list for the National Defensive Player of the Year. This is the second year that Edmiston has received preseason mention on the Nagurski Trophy watch list. He is one of six American Athletic Conference players named to the list.
A 6'3", 241-pound linebacker from Gatesville, Texas, Edmiston has compiled over 100 tackles in each of the last two seasons. He led Tulsa in 2018 with 113 tackles, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Edmiston had seven double-figure tackle games last season with a season-high 12 stops twice, while also recording five takeaways in the final nine games.
In his career, Edmiston has totaled 237 tackles, 9.5 stops for -23 yards, five interceptions, five fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles. He has registered 13 career double-digit tackle games.
The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
Tulsa opens the season on Friday night, August 30 at Michigan State. The Hurricane opens the home season two weeks later on Saturday, Sept. 14, against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff from H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Season tickets for the entire 6-game home schedule are available for as low as $100, while Mazzio's Family Fun Zone ticket prices start at $150. Fans can also purchase a 3-game mini-plan ticket package that include games against Oklahoma State, Navy and UCF. Mini-plan packages start at $90.
