The Tulsa women's soccer team began the 2019 season with a dominating 7-0 win over Texas Southern on Friday night in the Cowgirl Classic hosted by McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.
"It rained most of the night and through most of the morning so the field was very soggy, so we were worried that we weren't going to be able to play the way we wanted to, but I'm proud the girls because they did just that," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. We came out from the start and Valiree scored and set the tone early. TSU tries to move the ball so I felt like we did a good job defensively and didn't allow them to extend plays and hold possession long. We know we have things to learn and work on, but I was proud of the effort. We had to work hard to score our goals and get the shutout, but it was a good way to start the year."
Valiree Morris put the Golden Hurricane on the board quickly as she punched in the first goal of the season with just 4:02 ticked off the clock. Addyson Guthrie gave TU a two-goal cushion in the 19th minute, followed by a score from Averee Dubach just under three minutes later. Isold Runarsdottir gave the Golden Hurricane a 4-0 lead at the break as she added a goal at the 34:53 mark.
Anna Williams (50:21), Neha Igwe (77:09) and Aubrey Lechlider (78:13) all added scores for Tulsa in the second frame for the final 7-0 score.
Tulsa had a 22-2 lead in shots, including a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-0 lead in corner kicks.
Morris had a team-best six shots, four of which were on goal, while Dubach, Igwe and Runarsdottir all came in off the bench and attempted two shots. Ten other TU players had one shot in the contest.
Mica MacKay logged the first 45 minute in goal, while Jazmiera Ditter played the second frame between the posts and recorded one save.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, August 25 to face host McNeese State beginning at 1:00 pm
