TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa women's and men's cross country teams opened their 2019 seasons with a second and third-place finish, respectively, at the Hurricane Preview on Saturday morning at Mohawk Sports Complex.

Both teams competed against squads from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The women finished second to Arkansas and had four runners in the top 10. Caroline Miller led the way for TU with a two-mile time of 13:00. The sophomore led a group of three other Golden Hurricane runners that finished just one second behind as Caitlin Klopfer, Ashley Barnes and Adrena Mazzei placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Alyssa Solberg rounded out the scoring for the Hurricane with a 24th-place finish and time of 14:16, while Jaidah McCallon also finished 25th at 14:58.

"They worked together and I was just very happy for our girls. Some of them have gotten to run in Tulsa, so that was nice," head coach Steve Gulley said. "We've been in a training mode, but the girls got to work together today and I hope they enjoyed it."

On the men's side, the Golden Hurricane took home third place behind Oklahoma State and Arkansas.

Tulsa had five runners make their collegiate debut at the meet and that group was paced by Jerik Embleton's 20:29 time (7th place) in the four-mile run. Jackson Schwartz was TU's top finisher, crossing the line in fourth place with a mark of 20:24, while Reed Sahadevan also scored in the top 10 with a time of 20:30 (8th place).

Tyler McGinnis (16th/20:55), Henry Williams (21st/20:58), Michael Gates (24th/21:06) and Greg Fehribach (25th/21:11) rounded out the Tulsa lineup.

"We saw some kids step up, but it's just so early in the season, I think their priority has been their training," Gulley said of the Hurricane men. "I was happy that they got an opportunity to run. It's important to run at home and I'm glad we had that opportunity."

Gulley was happy with the way that both teams ran and said the race would help Tulsa's depth later on in the 2019 campaign.

"A big key is that you have to have depth for the whole season," Gulley said. "That's the key. We're trying to see what our depth is going to be. The second key is just keeping everybody healthy and then we hope for good things."

Both squads will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
