THE STORYLINES . . .
•   Tulsa is in its 120th season of football this year, as college football celebrates its 150th year.
•   Tulsa has the smallest FBS enrollment with 3,297 undergraduate students, while San Jose State has an enrollment of 33,409 students.
•   The two schools were former members together of the Western Athletic Conference between 1996-2004.
*   Tulsa opened the season with a 28-7 loss at #18/20 Michigan State, while San Jose defeated Nothern Colorado at home 35-18.
 
THE SERIES . . .
•   This is the 8th meeting in the series between the two schools.
•   Tulsa leads the series 4-3 and has won the last three meetings … the Hurricane is 3-1 in Tulsa, while San Jose State has a 2-1 record in San Jose.
•   The last meeting came in the 2016 season opener as Tulsa grabbed a 45-10 home victory.
*   Tulsa's win in San Jose came in the 2003 regular season finale 34-32.
 
FIRST & TEN . . .
•   Tulsa has seven 2018 bowl participants on its 2019 schedule –– Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulane, UCF and Houston.
•   Tulsa had 7 first-time starters in the lineup in the season opener, including one on defense (Jaxon Player) and 4 on offense (X'Zauvea Gadlin, Denzel Carter, Sam Crawford, Jr. and Zach Smith) … plus kickers Zack Long on kickoffs and Jacob Rainey on placements.
•   Sam Crawford, Jr. caught his first career touchdown on a 28-yard pass on just his third career reception.
•   Zach Smith had his first touchdown throw in his Tulsa career with a 28-yard toss to Sam Crawford, Jr. against Michigan State, but it was the 22nd of his collegiate career (21 at Baylor) in 19 career games.
 
DEFENSE IN THE OPENER . . .
•   Tulsa held Michigan State to 8 possessions of gaining less than 10 yards.
•   Tulsa had 6 TFLs against Michigan State, including one sack.
•   Tulsa's defense had two huge 4th down stops in the first half vs. Michigan State – the 1st holding MSU on 4th & 1 at the Tulsa 27-yard line (Brandon Johnson & Kendarin Ray) and the 2nd time holding MSU on 4th & 1 at the Tulsa 9-yard line (Manny Bunch).
•   Tulsa's defense gave up just 19 points (1 TD, 4 FGs) at Michigan State… the remaining 9 points were scored off of a safety and fumble recovery.
•   The Hurricane held MSU to 108 rushing yards and a 2.7 average per carry.
•   Three MSU drives started within the Tulsa 40-yard line (24, 36 and 30-yard lines) … Tulsa held the Spartans to field goals on each of those possessions.
•   In the final 32 minutes of the game, the Tulsa defense gave up only a field goal against the Spartans.
 
TREVIS . . .
•   Senior defensive end Trevis Gipson was a menace for the Michigan State offense, putting pressure on the Spartans quarterback throughout the night.
•   Among Gipson's 4 tackles, he totaled 2 TFLs for -10 yards and one sack for -10 yards … he also was credited with 2 QB hurries.
•  His sack was the 6th of his career and the third in the last 2 games dating back to the 2018 season finale against SMU.
 
SMITH GETS THE CALL . . .
•   Junior Zach Smith got the call as the starting quarterback in the season opener at Michigan State.
•   Smith and sophomore Seth Boomer, who started 8 games last year, competed for the starting QB spot during fall camp.
•   Smith completed 16-of-27 passes for 153 yards and one TD in the opener against Michigan State … he led Tulsa on a 7-play, 85-yard touchdown drive by completing 3-of-6 passes for 68 yards on that drive.
•   Smith played in 18 games at Baylor in 2016 and 2017, while starting 10 of those contests … he put up career numbers at Baylor of 2,997 yards, 21 TDs and a 55.6 completion percentage.
•   He threw for at least 200 yards in his first 7 career starts and 8 of his first 10 starts.
•   Smith has 10 career passes for 50+ yards in his career, all before this year.
•   Smith had a career-high 463 yards and 4 TDs on 33-of-50 passes against No. 3 Oklahoma in 2017.
