Tulsa Softball Goes 1-1 on Second Day of Bulldog Kickoff Classic

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Golden Hurricane goes 1-1 on the second day of the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, defeating North Alabama 1-0 before falling to Tennessee State 2-1 in 10 innings.
Tulsa started the day picking up its 7th win behind dominant pitching from junior Samantha Pochop who picked up her second win of the season. Pochop struck out a career-high 14 batters throwing a complete game shutout only allowing 1 hit to UNA.
The Hurricane started the bottom of the 10th inning against Tennessee State down 2-1 placing Abby Jones on second with no outs because of the International Tie-Breaker. Kylie Norwood singled to place runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Norwood, the winning run, moved to second on a groundout; however, Jones was caught stealing before the Hurricane grounded out to end the game.
Makayla Jackson highlighted the second game for the Hurricane going 3-3 from the plate, and Norwood went 2-4 against the Tigers. Alexis Perry came in to pinch hit for Tulsa recorded the Hurricane's first triple of the year in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Tulsa mustered only 3 hits against North Alabama, scoring the winning run on a Chenise Delce double in the top of the 6th inning.
Game One (Tulsa 1, North Alabama 0)
Pochop continued her incredible start to the season with her shut out against UNA. On the season she has thrown 15.2 innings, striking out 30 while only allowing 5 hits. She is 2-0 on the year and has 2 saves.
The junior struck out 8 of the first 9 batters she faced, striking out the side in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. Her previous career-high in strikeouts was 13 which she put in against North Dakota on Feb. 15, 2019.
With one out in the top of the 6th inning, Norwood reached first on an error by the second baseman. Tajiah Ellison singled to center field putting runners on first and second, leading to the RBI double by Delce.
North Alabama (5-2) put a runner on first with a single in the 4th inning, moving her to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, Pochop ended the inning striking out the final two batters squandering the Lion's opportunity.
Game Two (Tennessee State 2, Tulsa 1)
Chenise Delce (3-0) took the circle in the second game throwing 7.0 innings allowing 7 hits, 1 run while striking out 3. Two hits, an error and a fielder's choice allowed the Tigers to take a 1st inning 1-0 lead.
The Hurricane fought back, starting the 6th inning off with a Delce single through the right-side. Makayla Jackson followed Delce, sending a single through the right-side putting runners on first and second with no outs. Haley Morgan, who pinch ran for Delce, stole third base while allowing Jackson to advance to second. With two in scoring position, Aubree Seaney hit a sacrifice fly to score Morgan from third. However, Jackson was left on third as the Hurricane ended the inning on two ground outs.
In the bottom of the 7th, Alexis Perry pinch hit for Gracie Garman, sending a triple to right-center. Two batters later Norwood walked, putting runners on the corners with one out. A flyout double-play ended the inning forcing the contest into extra-innings.
Senior Kassidy Scott (1-1) picked up her first loss of the season, relieving Delce in extras. She pitched 3 innings allowing 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 2. In the top of the 10th, the Tigers placed a runner on 2nd, who moved to third on a ground out. With 2 outs, the Tigers singled through the right side scoring the winning run.

TU will return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 a.m. (CT) to close out play in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic; they will face off against the loser of North Alabama vs. Mississippi State.
