Tulsa Takes on Western Illinois and the Jayhawk Invitational this Week

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa softball team returns to the diamond for its first midweek matchup taking on Western Illinois on March 11 at 5:00 p.m. at the Collins Family Softball Complex. The Golden Hurricane then closes out its tournament season on March 13-15 for five games in three days in the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. against Kansas and Kansas Missouri. 
 
Tulsa (13-11 is coming into the weekend after winning 2-of-5 games in the FIU Classic. The Hurricane tossed shutouts against Maryland, 4-0 and Samford 1-0; however Tulsa fell to host FIU 5-3, Maryland 5-0 and in extra innings to Ball State, 2-1.

Red-shirt freshman Kari Briggs led the Hurricane from the plate during the FIU Classic batting .300 with 3 hits in 10 at-bats. Against FIU, Briggs had a hit and drove in two runs with her third home run in 6 games; she added her team-leading 2nd triple, driving in a run during the Hurricane's 4-0 Maryland win.

Chenise Delce leads the Hurricane pitching rotation with a record of 6-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 63.0 innings, striking out a season-high 10 batters against Samford. Junior Samantha Pochop has a 4-2 record and the team-leading 0.87 ERA with a team-leading 64 strikeouts in 51.2 innings.

GOLDEN HURRICANE FIRST MIDWEEK MATCHUP

• Tulsa welcomes the Western Illinois Leathernecks on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m. to the Collins Family Softball Complex for its first midweek game of the season. 

• The game is free admission for all Hurricane fans.

• It is Tik Tok night, as fans are requested to send in their best Tik Toks for a chance to be on the video board during the game.

• The Leathernecks are 6-13 on the year ... they are led by junior outfielder Alyssa Ealy who has a .362 average with 21 hits this season.

TULSA AT JAYHAWK INVITATIONAL

• Tulsa will square off in their 6th and final regular season tournament in Lawrence, Kan. at the Jayhawk invitational, Friday-Sunday, March 13-15. 

• Tulsa will face both the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Roos twice over the weekend.

• The tournament starts Friday, March 13, as Tulsa faces host Kansas at 6:00 p.m. (CT).

• On Satuday, Tulsa will take on Kansas City at 12:00 p.m. before closing out the day against Kansas at 5:00 p.m. (CT) ... the Hurricane will end the weekend against the Roos on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

HURRICANE GETS TWO WINS AT FIU CLASSIC

• Tulsa went 2-3 last weekend in the FIU Classic, defeating Maryland and Samford ... the Hurricane dropped games against Ball State 2-1, Maryland 5-0 and host FIU 5-3..

• Tulsa defeated Maryland 4-0 and Samford 1-0 with shutouts by Samantha Pochop and Chenise Delce, respectively.

Kari Briggs put in another solid weekend from the plate hitting .300 with a triple and home run while driving in 4 Hurricane runners.

• Tulsa lost a heart-breaker to Ball State, as the Hurricane entered extra innings tied 0-0 ... Tulsa scored in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI single from Briggs ... in the bottom of the ninth, Ball State loaded the bases and with two outs Tulsa tried to turn a double-play; however, a throwing error allowed Ball State to score the winning run.
 

TOUGH SCHEDULE

• Tulsa's 2020 schedule has proven to be a very tough slate, as the Hurricane has already played 5 games against 4 of the nation's top-25 teams according to the USA Today/NFA Coaches poll –– #21 Mississippi State, #24 Baylor, #19 Minnesota twice, and #9 Oregon.

• Tulsa defeated Mississippi 2-1, then kept the contests close losing by one to Baylor (1-0) and Oregon (3-2) and by two runs to Minnesota (3-1). 

• The Hurricane has 3 games awaiting against top-20 teams in the USA Today/NFA Coaches poll –– #13 Oklahoma State, #20 Arkansas and #6 Oklahoma, while Houston is receiving votes.

• In the ESPN.com poll, a total of 6 currently ranked teams and another 4 that have received votes are on Tulsa's 2020 schedule.

• Tulsa has an RPI ranking of #69, while 16 of Tulsa's opponents (26 games) are ranked among the top-100 in the RPI.


DELCE GETTING DUBS

Chenise Delce has led the Tulsa pitching staff this year with her consistent play.

• Over the weekend, she picked up her team-leading 6th win of the season with a 1-0 shutout against Samford.

• In the game against the Bulldogs, Delce allowed 5 hits but struck out a season-high 10 batters,

• Opposing batters hit only .193 against the sophomore, who has a 2.00 ERA on the season.

• In her 63.0 innings this season, Delce has struck out 48 opposing batters, allowing just 44 hits and 22 walks.

SENIORS LEAD FROM THE PLATE

• Seniors Alexis Perry and Mikayla Whitten are two of three Hurricane players to have appeared in every contest this season.

• They each have two of the top three batting averages on the team ... Perry is second on the team with a .318 average, while Whitten is hitting .281.

• Perry leads the team with 21 hits and 15 RBIs ... Whitten is second on the team in hits with 18 and third in RBIs with 10 ... they are both tied for the team lead in doubles with 5.

• With a triple, two home runs and a slugging percentage of .515, Perry has been the most consistent Hurricane hitter this season.
 

PERRY, JACKSON HOT AT THE PLATE

• Sophomore MaKayla Jackson leads Tulsa at the plate with a .348 batting average with 8 hits in 23 at-bats, while also coming in with a .391 slugging percentage.

• Senior Alexis Perry has a .318 batting average and leads the Hurricane in hits (21) and RBIs (15) in 66 at-bats … Perry is third on the team with a .515 slugging percentage.
